Pressure-resistant ATEX motors

In the petrochemical industry they make use of a great variety of pumps. One of the requirements is that all these pumps must be equipped with pressure-resistant ATEX motors. ATEX stands for ‘ATmosphère EXplosible’ (Explosive Atmosphere). This comprises two European directives on explosion hazards under atmospheric conditions. As of 1 July 2003, European organisations must comply with the ATEX 153 directive and the ATEX 114 directive, when the risk of explosion exists. The ATEX 114 directive is especially targeted at equipment used in places where the risk of an explosion is imminent. If the installation prescribes a motor of the pressure-resistant variety, the construction of the housing of the electric motor must be designed in such a way that the motor does not present a danger to the environment in the event of an internal explosion. All these pressure-resistant motors are individually inspected and approved by an independent party, the so-called notified bodies.
